Masdar Secures Malaysia’s Largest Floating Solar Plant, Marking Its Market Entry

ABU DHABI – Abu Dhabi-based renewable energy leader Masdar has officially entered the Malaysian market with its inaugural clean energy project. The company has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Malaysia’s national utility, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), to develop a 200-megawatt (MW) floating solar photovoltaic plant at Chereh Dam in Pahang.

According to Abu Dhabi-based reports, the facility is expected to become the largest floating solar project in Southeast Asia once operational, significantly boosting Malaysia’s renewable energy capacity.

The Chereh Dam solar plant, developed by a consortium led by Masdar in partnership with Malaysian firms Citaglobal and Tiza Global, will span approximately 950 acres and is expected to generate enough clean electricity to power more than 100,000 homes. The project is valued at an estimated over RM850 million (approximately US$208 million).

The project was awarded under Malaysia’s Large Scale Solar Cycle 5+ (LSS5+) competitive tender programme, where the Masdar-led consortium secured the contract with the lowest tariff bid in the floating solar category.

“This milestone project, our largest floating solar development globally and our inaugural project in Malaysia, reaffirms Masdar’s expertise in floating solar and our position as a trusted partner across the region.” – Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, Chief Executive Officer, Masdar, said.

This floating solar development marks the first project under a 10-gigawatt renewable energy roadmap agreed between Masdar and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) in 2023, signalling a longer-term commitment to Malaysia’s clean energy transition.

Masdar’s Chief Executive Officer has described the initiative as not only the company’s inaugural Malaysian project but also its largest floating solar development globally to date, reflecting the company’s expanding global footprint and confidence in Malaysia’s renewable energy potential.
