Launching Ceremony at Malaysia Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Summit 2024 – Utusan

The Ministry of Economy organized the Malaysia Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Summit 2024 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on 17 and 18 September 2024. The event was officiated by the Prime Minister, YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim. This summit, themed “Local Action for an Inclusive, Sustainable, and Resilient Malaysia,” reflects the nation’s strong commitment to accelerating the implementation of the SDGs in the remaining six years leading up to 2030.

In his speech during the opening ceremony, the Prime Minister called on all parties to intensify efforts to achieve the country’s excellent performance goals. In addition to the SDG goals and the MADANI Economic Framework, emphasis should be placed on fostering a spirit of strength and implementing changes in line with current demands. The Prime Minister also stressed that national development must include an understanding based on MADANI principles such as compassion, sustainability, and justice, while considering environmental aspects. He emphasized that there must be a balance between the economy, society, and the environment, and therefore, the implementation of SDGs must be supported as a core component of development.

The Prime Minister also expressed the Government’s continued commitment to the implementation of the SDGs. Earlier, during the opening session, YB Dato’ Hajah Hanifah Hajar Taib, Deputy Minister of Economy, highlighted the core of the government’s planning in driving sustainable economic growth and emphasized key issues such as climate change and inequality in society as primary areas of focus.

This summit gathered nearly 6,000 participants from government bodies, civil society organizations, the private sector, academia, and the general public to strengthen multi-stakeholder relationships and discuss strategies to achieve the SDG objectives. The event featured 7 plenary sessions, 10 parallel sessions, and 48 exhibition booths showcasing all efforts related to the SDGs.

The recommendations and views discussed during this summit are crucial inputs for the preparation of the Thirteenth Malaysia Plan, which will shape the country’s direction for the period of 2026 to 2030, as well as for the preparation of Malaysia’s Voluntary National Review, which will be presented at the United Nations in 2025.
