ESG and 13th Malaysia Plan on Track Despite Ministerial Resignations

June 8 — Deputy Minister of Economy, Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib, has assured that the implementation of Malaysia’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Action Plan and the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) will continue as scheduled, despite the recent resignations of several key ministers in the government.

In her statement, Hanifah stressed that both ESG and RMK13 are nearing their final stages of preparation. Despite the uncertainty generated by the ministerial changes, she reassured that the initiatives would not experience delays. “The government remains fully committed to ensuring that both ESG and RMK13 are carried out as planned, with no interruptions to the trajectory we have set,” she affirmed. Hanifah also emphasized that these initiatives are crucial to Malaysia’s long-term development, highlighting their focus on sustainable growth and environmental conservation.

The resignations of Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Minister of Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad had raised concerns about the stability of government policies and their execution. Both ministers played key roles in advancing the nation’s sustainable development goals, which include incorporating ESG principles into Malaysia’s economic and environmental strategies. Rafizi’s resignation, in particular, led to questions about the continuity of Malaysia’s economic reforms. However, Hanifah provided clarity, assuring that the ministries involved are fully prepared to continue the work.

According to Hanifah, the implementation of these strategies will rely on strong collaborations between the government, the private sector, and civil society. The government has already engaged with stakeholders to ensure that ESG and RMK13 meet the sustainable development targets Malaysia has committed to, both domestically and internationally. “This collaboration is vital to ensuring that Malaysia stays on track with its environmental goals and continues to be a responsible player in global sustainable development efforts,” she stated.

She further noted that ESG is more than just a framework for governance and environmental responsibility. It is also about fostering an inclusive, fair, and sustainable economy for Malaysia’s citizens. Hanifah reminded the public that the ultimate goal of these initiatives is to ensure the well-being of future generations by preserving the environment and securing economic prosperity.

The government is optimistic that by aligning its policies with global sustainable development goals and adhering to ESG principles, Malaysia will be able to meet its environmental targets. Hanifah concluded by urging all stakeholders, including the private sector and the public, to lend their full support to the continued success of the ESG action plan and RMK13, ensuring Malaysia’s long-term progress towards a greener and more sustainable future.
